Please read a touching story by our 2017-18 Membership Engagement Chair, Kelly Jasen.
I can vividly remember the day my mother handed me a pair of scissors and we snipped away her last few lonely strands of beautiful blonde hair. Almost 20 years later, it was a honor to stand with 8 fellow JULEP ladies in support of Baptist Healthcare Foundation’s Bras Across the Bridge – an annual event to raise money and awareness for ladies battling breast cancer. Although Hurricane Nate gave us a surprise visit and took the “bridge” out of the event, we still had a wonderful time. We enjoyed complimentary massages, live music, a silent auction, costume contest, face painting and mimosas!
Almost $26,000 was raised and will provide free mammograms to local women who are not financially able to receive one on their own. In addition, JULEP ladies showed their support by generously donating nearly 50 bras which will be gifted to women and teens in need at Lakeview Center.
As I looked across the Grand Marlin on October 7th, I saw several beautiful bald heads and I was reminded of my mother’s fight. I was reminded of the unbelievable courage and strength it takes to battle this terrible disease. Breast cancer isn’t all pink ribbons and feather boas. It is our mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends who are fighting for their lives. As the daughter of a survivor, I want to say “thank you” from the bottom of my heart for supporting other women. I am overwhelmed with pride knowing that our donations and bras will benefit women in our community who need our help the most.
Kelly Jasen and the Membership Engagement Committee thank all Leaguers who have donated nearly 50 bras for this worthy cause. 22 gorgeous bras were donated at the League’s General Membership Meeting in October.
Thank you so much for your generosity!
